King Edward’s visit to The Playhouse

A crisp Wednesday morning, 11 March, saw the King Edward matric class pile into the buses and travel down to Durban. The notorious Durban heat did not disappoint. Because of Mrs Naidoo’s paranoia about time, we were 1 ½ hours early. The extra time was wiled away at the museum across the road.. Back at The Playhouse, we had a short wait before being ushered into the theatre itself. The play was much of the same as last year so no surprises for the teachers. Learners, however, found much to appreciate.

The role of Polonius was well cast and drew many favourable responses. Sadly, some of the actors lacked in the enunciation department which made it difficult to follow the dialogue. Fortunately, our learners were familiar with the play and could fill in the gaps. The learners’ engagement with the play was constructive as they were able to rate performances and question the wisdom of certain sub-plots being omitted.

Overall, the theatre experience was valued. Our learners were commended for their good behaviour and mature appreciation of the play. It was a good day out, albeit long.
