Glorious Sport at King Edward High

The gloomy skies, and predicted rain, could not dampen the enthusiasm of players and spectators alike on the 9th of April. It was the highly anticipated local derby between KEHS and KC after all.

The occasion proved to be both enjoyable and heartwarming, as the cobwebs of Covid were shaken off in a full day of attractive sport. We commenced with hockey fixtures against Kokstad Junior School, where our U12 team won 1:0 and our U13’s lost 2:0. The hockey continued with an excellent U16 game vs KC, which KEHS won 2:1. Then it was the turn of our 1st team who dominated their fixture, but were unfortunate not to score. The final result was a 0:0 draw.

Netball continues to grow and develop as a sport at KEHS and the fruit of our efforts were reflected in the 15:6 win for the U16’s over KC. Our much improved 1st Netball team held their own until the final quarter, where we were undone by a lack of match fitness. The final result was victory to Kokstad College by 33:22.

As usual, the greatest excitement revolved around the rugby matches. The KEHS U16 team rose to the occasion and put on a spectacular display, with riveting moments. They kept their rivals on the back foot throughout and won comfortably 43:0.

The day culminated in the clash of the 1st team rugby heroes. It was clear from the outset that the KEHS team were revelling in the strong local support. The forwards dominated up front and gave KC a torrid time, while the fleet footed backs dazzled with their pace and guile. It was a resounding 32:0 victory to King Edward High School. All agreed that it was such a pleasure to be playing competitive sport again.

We congratulate all the staff and players from both sides and thank them for producing a spectacular day of sport.
