Sports Festival: KEHS vs Aliwal North
Friday, the 11th, was a sports feast. King Edward High School hosted Aliwal and held a sports festival consisting of the following sports: hockey, netball, and rugby. This sporting event is greatly anticipated by learners, teachers, parents, and the community at large. Young and old were found in the crowd of spectators, cheering, and encouraging their favourite teams. The aroma of braaied boerewors lingered in the air, adding to the jovial mood. It was truly a feast in every sense of the word.
KEHS U16 won their opening hockey match of the year 2:1, courtesy of Refengkgotso and Angel. This was an incredibly good start to the season. The first team hockey lost their match against Aliwal North 2:1. We are proud of them as they were every bit as good as the opposition and could easily have won the match.
The First and U16 Netball teams met very stiff opposition and lost their games, while gaining valuable experience.
The highlight of the day undoubtedly was the rugby. We were greatly impressed by the performance and sportsmanship, of both schools. All our young men played with determination and focus and one could see that they were well prepared for this game. The U14 team was unfortunate to be pipped at the post 13:12 in the last second of the game. Our U16 boys gave their all and drew 5:5. The First rugby side met an experienced, skilled and large team from Aliwal North. They never gave up and did exceptionally well to only concede four tries. Congratulations to them on their fine efforts. They lost with their head held up high as they learnt to live out the truth of Rudyard Kiplings Poem “If”:
“If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same…
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son”
