“Local is lekker”
Our annual fixture against our neighbours, St Monica’s, is an important part of our sporting calendar. Good relationships between our local schools builds a stronger Matatiele. In this way, the community benefits from sporting development and good healthy competition. King Edward High School would like to extend our thanks to all the St Monica’s sports teams for participating in our hockey, netball and rugby fixtures on 16 May.
JP & SP Sport
Our JP and SP sports teams enjoyed numerous sporting fixtures during the past 2 weeks; from SP Netball at Kokstad Primary to hosting Bergview for JP hockey and rugby matches. Our JP sports teams travelled to an icy Underberg on 20 May, for their splendid Ball2Berg festival, while our SP teams enjoyed much more agreeable weather at Kuswag for hockey, rugby and netball matches. Last week we hosted St Patrick’s for SP hockey matches and Bergview for netball. Furthermore, our JP enjoyed more hockey and rugby matches against Bergview and netball against KJS.
Saturday, 27 May, announced the end of a magnificent sporting term for JP and SP sport at the Wacky Winter Sport Festival of St Patrick’s.

HS sport vs Umtata
As our high school winter sport season draws to a close, our teams were excited to give it their all in the last few fixtures. We did just that, as we achieved some fantastic results on the rugby, netball and hockey fronts. Our first set of results against Umtata High School on 20 May, were as follows: u/16 hockey won 4-0, 1st hockey won 5-0, u/16 netball lost 10-14, 1st netball won 19-16, u/16 rugby won 53-0 and 1st rugby won 19-17.
HS Rugby vs SPC
Our rugby season was crammed with big games, narrow losses and fantastic victories. Our rugby boys come to the end of their 2023 season with a sense of pride. Our final game saw us heading across the Mzimvubu River to St Patrick’s College on 25 May. A well-oiled and season-hardened KEHS team proved that continuous hard work and our ever present “never give up attitude” pays off. We are extremely proud of our boys. The u/15’s won 15-14 and the 1st team won 62-0.
EG Netball & Boys Hockey Challenge
On 26 May, our netball girls and hockey boys partook in the EG Challenge hosted by St Patrick’s. The hockey boys came 2nd and our netball girls won the EG Netball Challenge trophy. The netball girls beat Bergview 12-3, SPC 9-0 and KC 8-7, while the hockey boys drew their matches against SPC and KC.
